Author Guidelines

Please read these guidelines carefully before preparing your submission. Manuscripts that do not comply with these requirements will be returned without review.

Aims and Scope

The Journal of Ethnomedicine and Medical Wellness (JEMEDWELL) welcomes contributions that foster the exchange of ideas and rational discourse among practicing educators, healthcare professionals, and medical researchers worldwide. We evaluate manuscripts not only on the quality of their output but also on their potential impact and contributions to the advancement of medical and healthcare development, with particular emphasis on ethnomedicine and integrative wellness approaches.

Scope Requirement: All submissions must originate from the 34 basic medicine departments. Manuscripts addressing unrelated topics will be automatically rejected without review.

Language and Style

English (US)
Clear and concise American English. Non-native speakers are strongly encouraged to have manuscripts reviewed by a native speaker before submission.

CSE Style Manual
Scientific Style and Format, Council of Science Editors (7th ed., 2006). Authors may also use the AJE Language Assessment Tool before submission.

Originality and Prior Publication

Only material that has not been previously published — whether in print or electronic format — and is not under consideration for publication elsewhere will be considered. An exception is made for abstracts published in conference proceedings. Prior presentation of data at scientific meetings does not preclude publication in JEMEDWELL.

All submissions will be screened for duplicate or prior publication using Turnitin. Authors found to have submitted previously published work will be permanently banned from future submissions, and their funding bodies and/or institutions will be notified.

Mandatory Submission Items

All 7 items below are mandatory. Manuscripts lacking any of these items will be automatically rejected during initial assessment, without proceeding to peer review.

Ethical Clearance

Provide the ethics committee (KEPK) approval number and attach a copy of the clearance certificate. For case series or case reports, submit patient/family informed consent (in English) and complete the ICMJE form. For systematic reviews and meta-analyses, provide the pre-registration ID (e.g., PROSPERO). Compliance with the Declaration of Helsinki (2013) must be explicitly stated in the Methods section.

Conflict of Interest Disclosure

Complete the ICMJE Disclosure of Interest form and clearly state any conflicts of interest in the manuscript. If no conflicts exist, a statement to that effect is required.

Funding Disclosure

Clearly state all funding sources in the manuscript. Include grant numbers where applicable. If no funding was received, a statement to that effect is required. Funding information must be removed from the blinded manuscript file.

Author Contributions

Provide a clear statement of each author's specific contributions using the CRediT (Contributor Roles Taxonomy) framework (conceptualization, methodology, data curation, writing, etc.), per ICMJE authorship criteria.

Author Declaration (No Self-Citation)

Submit a signed declaration confirming that no self-referencing or self-citations have been added solely to inflate citation counts, consistent with COPE guidelines on citation manipulation.

Item 6 — Generative AI Disclosure (New Policy 2024)

Generative AI Use Declaration

Submit a completed declaration regarding the use of any Generative AI tools (e.g., ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, Copilot, etc.) in the preparation of your manuscript. This applies to use in writing, editing, figure generation, data analysis, or any other aspect of the work.

Key Rules (COPE 2023 · ICMJE 2023 · Nature Portfolio 2023)

AI cannot be listed as an author. Authorship requires accountability that AI cannot fulfill. Listing AI as an author is grounds for rejection and retraction.

Any use of AI tools for drafting, editing, or paraphrasing must be disclosed in the Methods section (for data analysis) or Acknowledgments (for writing assistance), specifying the tool name and version.

Authors bear full responsibility for the accuracy, integrity, and originality of all AI-generated content. AI does not absolve authors of responsibility for errors, fabrications, or hallucinations.

AI-generated text that was not disclosed constitutes a form of plagiarism and will be treated as a breach of publication ethics under COPE guidelines.

Use of AI tools for grammar checking and language editing (e.g., Grammarly) does not require disclosure in the Declaration form, but must still be mentioned in the cover letter.

Reporting Guideline Checklist

Submit a completed reporting checklist appropriate to your study type. This checklist must be uploaded as a supplementary file. Use the EQUATOR Network to find the correct guideline for your study design.

Double-Blind Peer Review Process

JEMEDWELL employs a double-blind review process — both reviewer and author identities remain concealed throughout the review process.

1 Submission Preparation

Prepare two separate files:

Title Page (Separate File)

Manuscript title · Authors' names, affiliations, ORCID IDs · Corresponding author address, phone, email

Blinded Manuscript (Separate File)

No author names or affiliations · Third person for self-reference · No acknowledgments · No funding info · Anonymized file metadata

Blinding checklist: Replace "as we have shown before" with "...has been shown before." Remove identifying information from figure files, file names, and document properties.

2 Initial Assessment

Manuscripts undergo an editorial desk review to verify:

Language quality assessment via AJE Grammar Tool

Completion of all 7 mandatory submission items

Turnitin plagiarism screen

3 Peer Review

Manuscripts passing initial assessment are sent to two acknowledged experts. Reviewers use the Reviewer's Assessment Checklist. Authors have 7 days to respond to reviewer comments and resubmit. Review is iterative — more than one round may be required to ensure quality.

4 Editorial Process and Publication

If the article passes peer review, it is sent to the editor for final proofreading and copyediting. The author must confirm the final version for publication and address any minor editorial revisions before the article is converted to PDF and published online.

Authorship Criteria (ICMJE)

Per ICMJE Recommendations, all four criteria must be met to qualify as an author:

Substantial contributions to conception and design, data acquisition, or analysis and interpretation

Drafting the article or revising it critically for important intellectual content

Final approval of the version to be published

Agreement to be accountable for all aspects of the work, including accuracy and integrity

Not sufficient for authorship: Acquisition of funding, data collection, or general supervision of the research group alone.

Author changes are prohibited after submission. Addition, deletion, or reordering of authors after submission is not permitted. Determine authorship carefully before submitting.

Non-author contributors (technical help, writing assistance, etc.) should be listed in the Acknowledgments section.

Review Article

Should provide comprehensive, critical reviews of research topics or methodological approaches highly relevant to medical research. Reviews must be interpretative rather than merely summary-based — describing various available approaches and their relative merits, limitations, and specific applications.

Tables and Figures

Tables

· Double-spaced on separate pages at end of document

· Use Word's "Insert Table" command — no tabs or spaces

· No shading; symbols confined to column headings

· Legend symbols in sequence: *, †, ‡, §, ||, ¶, #

· Tables from other sources require written reproduction permission

Figures

· Sized to fit one or two columns; fonts 8–10 pt at 100%

· Multi-panel figures labeled A, B, C with legend descriptions

· Bars: black or white only (no shades of grey); use bold hatch marks for 3+ datasets

· Use words in legends (e.g., "black circles = group 1")

· Legends at end of document — not embedded in figure files

· Reproduced figures require written permission from original publisher

Abbreviations and Units

Abbreviations

Use abbreviations only when necessary (long chemical names, procedures, frequently used terms). Abbreviate units of measure only when used with numbers. Define all abbreviations at first use and in table/figure legends.

· Clinical lab values in International System of Units (SI)

· Use kilocalories (not kilojoules)

· HbA1c: report dually as "% (mmol/mol)" — use NGSP converter

References

Vancouver Style — Numbered in order of citation
